"Tianhe No.1" is a landmark achievement of the key project of the National 863 project "the research on the development of the computer system of the ten million times high efficiency" undertook by National University of Defense Technology.The school with the Tianjin Binhai New Area in close cooperation, in September 2008 successfully developed the peak performance of 1206 trillion times per second, China's first petaflop supercomputer system, which realized the development of our own supercomputer from one million to ten million times. Since then, China has become the world's second after the United States to develop a ten million supercomputer.

In November 2008, in the international supercomputer rankings, the system ranked first in Asia, the world's fifth.

As the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, the service host, "Tianhe No.1" has been widely applied in oil exploration, high-end equipment development, bio medicine, animation design, new energy, new materials, engineering design and simulation analysis, weather forecasting, remote sensing data processing, financial risk analysis and other fields. The center cooperates with the relevant enterprises, scientific research institutes and universities, set up 3 sub centers and 5 information processing platform, providing high performance computing services for more than 20 users.
